RICHLAND, Wash. — Police are urging people to avoid Howard Amon Park area until Thursday while they investigate a shooting.

Reports of shots fired came in around 8 p.m. as the park was filled with families getting ready for a night of celebration.

Richland Police confirm one victim went to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds after an argument between two groups in the park got out of hand.

Hundreds of people, including small children were down at the park enjoying the holiday when shots were fired in broad daylight.

Sgt. Drew Florence said with Richland Police said the shooting happened near the south end of the park right next to the community center.

Florence said this is an isolated incident that the two groups involved knew each other and that the area is still a safe place to bring your family once they've finished their investigation.

"I’ve worked here seventeen years and I can’t think of another instance of something like this happening at a park," he said.

Florence said the park is closed while they comb for evidence but he thinks it'll be open by Thursday.
