Search for swimmer

WALLA WALLA COUNTY, Wash. -- Officials say they are currently searching for a 39 year-old man who jumped into the Snake River and never resurfaced.

Authorities say the incident happened at 2:40 pm Saturday afternoon.

According to a news release, the man jumped from a boat near Fishhook Park to retrieve a hat that fell in the water.

Officials say the man struggled to stay afloat in the strong wind and waves.

Witnesses on the boat made several attempts to save the man but couldn't.

Authorities say the man was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.

Several agencies are involved in the search of the lost swimmer but all attempts to find him have been unsuccessful.

Authorities are interviewing several witnesses.

The identity of the man has not been released.

The Walla Walla Sheriff's Office also issued a warning to wear a personal flotation device when out on the open water.
