Finley students collect 649 pairs of shoes for charity

FINLEY, Wash. -- Middle school students in Finley have collected almost 1,300 shoes for kids overseas.

There was a two-week competition to see which class could bring in the most shoes. 649 pairs of slippers, sandals, sneakers and heels were collected and placed in the shape of a heart in the school gym.

An organization called Shoes For Love will donate the shoes to kids in Africa, Ecuador and Haiti.

Organizers were blown away by the support.

"I'm very, very amazed at how each one of them was trying really hard," said Mari Carrion. "It was more than just a competition for them."

The winning class at Finley Middle School got a pizza party. They were responsible for bringing in more than 250 pairs of shoes.
